Alcalá de Henares

Alcalá was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1998. With the arrival of the Romans this remarkable city called Complutum was created. The main communications hub of the central region of Roman Hispania. Several cultures have occupied the city, of which three came to live simultaneously in the city. It was an ecclesiastical lordship for its links to the archbishopric of Toledo.

 

It is famous for its University which was founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros and competed with that of Salamanca. It is also credited for being the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, whose home museum can still be visited. It has a great civil and religious heritage. Its Roman ruins, palaces, churches and convents make it an unforgettable authentic world heritage city.
